Why do wrong arguments sometimes sound completely right?
Because the mind often reacts to the confidence, familiarity or emotion of a statement before checking whether the reason truly proves the claim.
“Everyone is buying it, so it must be the best.” “He wears glasses, so he must be intelligent.” “This product is safe because the advertisement says natural.” These statements contain reasons—but the reasons may not logically support the conclusions.
Hetvabhasa trains you to look beyond how convincing a reason sounds and ask a harder question: does this reason actually prove the claim?

What is Hetvabhasa?
In Indian logic, hetu means the reason used to prove something. Abhasa means appearance. Hetvabhasa is therefore a reason that appears valid but is defective.
The claim may be true or false. The central problem is that the offered reason fails to establish it correctly.
Hetvabhasa does not simply mean “a wrong conclusion.” It refers to a faulty or misleading reason used in an inference.
A convincing claim still needs a reason that survives evidence and comparison.
What does a valid reason need?
Use this simple example: “The hill has fire because there is smoke.” The hill is the subject, fire is what we want to establish, and smoke is the reason.
Smoke should actually be present on the hill.
The reason should be connected with what is being proved.
The same reason should not regularly appear where the claim is absent.
Stronger evidence should not contradict or cancel the reason.
Savyabhicara: the reason is inconclusive
Savyabhicara occurs when the reason is not reliably connected with the conclusion. It appears in cases where the conclusion is true and also in cases where it is false.
“Ravi is highly intelligent because he wears glasses.” Wearing glasses is found among people with many different levels of intelligence. The reason does not prove the claim.

The reason wanders across cases and cannot settle the conclusion.
Viruddha: the reason proves the opposite
Viruddha occurs when the offered reason does not support the claim; it supports the opposite conclusion.
“This app protects privacy because it shares every user detail with advertisers.” Sharing personal data points toward weak privacy, not strong privacy.

A Viruddha reason undermines the conclusion it is supposed to establish.
Satpratipaksha: an equally strong reason supports the opposite conclusion
Satpratipaksha appears when a reason for one conclusion is counterbalanced by another reason supporting the opposite conclusion.
“Online learning is always best because it is flexible.” An opposite universal claim may be offered: “Offline learning is always best because interaction is direct.” Each reason shows one advantage, but neither proves an absolute conclusion for every learner and topic.
The lesson is not that flexibility or interaction is unimportant. The problem is using one advantage to prove an unlimited universal claim.
A counter-reason prevents the original reason from settling the inference.
Asiddha: the reason itself is unestablished
Asiddha occurs when the offered reason has not been proved or does not properly exist in the subject under discussion.
“She will definitely top the exam because she has photographic memory.” Before using photographic memory as the reason, we must establish that she actually has it.

A reason cannot prove a conclusion until the reason itself is established.
Badhita: stronger evidence directly contradicts the reason
Badhita occurs when the inference is blocked by stronger knowledge, such as direct perception or clear evidence.
An advertisement says, “This drink is sugar-free because it is natural.” The nutrition label clearly shows 12 grams of sugar. Direct evidence defeats the claim.
The important idea is that an argument cannot survive when a stronger and more immediate source of knowledge directly contradicts it.
When clear evidence says otherwise, the attractive reason cannot rescue the conclusion.

If not, think Asiddha.
If yes, think Savyabhicara.
If yes, think Viruddha.
If yes, think Satpratipaksha.
If yes, think Badhita.

A question may give an inference and ask you to identify the defect. The options can feel similar because every type contains a faulty reason. The fastest approach is to identify exactly how the reason fails.

The purpose of Hetvabhasa is larger than remembering five terms. It trains you to pause when a reason feels convincing and examine whether it is established, relevant, consistent and undefeated.
A statement becomes an argument when it gives a reason. It becomes a good argument only when that reason can survive questioning.
