UGC NET Paper 1 PYQ: How to Use Previous-Year Questions to Find Repeated Concepts, Fix Weak Units and Improve Your Score

By Updated 18 July 2026 Paper: UGC NET Paper 1 Approx. 8-minute read

Previous-year questions are one of the most useful resources in UGC NET Paper 1—but only when they are used to understand concepts, patterns and mistakes.

Many aspirants repeatedly solve Paper 1 questions, check the answer and move on. Their question count increases, but their score remains almost unchanged because the missing concept is never repaired.

The effective PYQ cycle Attempt → Check → Classify the error → Revise the concept → Reattempt without seeing the answer

How should you use UGC NET Paper 1 PYQs?

Start with questions from examination cycles conducted under the current ten-unit syllabus. Solve them unit-wise while learning, then attempt complete Paper 1 sets under time pressure. Record every conceptual, factual, calculation and interpretation error.

A PYQ is complete only when you can explain why the correct option is right and why the remaining options are wrong.

01 Understand the resource

What does UGC NET Paper 1 PYQ mean?

PYQ means previous-year question. In Paper 1, these are questions asked in the common General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude during earlier UGC NET examination cycles.

Paper 1 currently contains 50 compulsory questions for 100 marks. Each correct response carries two marks, and there is no negative marking under the June 2026 scheme.

PYQs reveal the examination language

They show how definitions are converted into statements, how close options are created, which concepts require calculation and where candidates commonly misread the question.

02 Download from reliable sources

Where can you find official UGC NET Paper 1 question papers?

UGC archive Older official Paper 1 PDFs

The UGC NET Bureau archive provides downloadable General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude question papers for older cycles, including July 2018 and November 2017.

Open official July 2018 papers →
NTA candidate documents Recent question paper and recorded responses

For recent NTA cycles, candidates should download the question paper and recorded responses when NTA activates them during the provisional-answer-key process.

Open the official NTA UGC NET website →
Avoid unverified answer keys

A memory-based PDF may contain incorrectly remembered wording or unofficial answers. Use final official keys when verifying disputed questions.

03 Choose papers strategically

Which Paper 1 PYQs should you prioritise?

The current Paper 1 syllabus is listed as applicable from the June 2019 cycle onward. Therefore, recent questions aligned with this syllabus should receive priority.

Older papers remain useful for concepts that still appear in the current syllabus, but their structure and terminology should be checked against the present ten-unit syllabus before including them in your preparation.

Question-paper group How to use it
Recent cycles under the current syllabus Primary source for question style, unit coverage and timed practice.
Older official Paper 1 papers Use selectively for overlapping concepts and additional practice.
Memory-based compilations Use only after checking wording and answers against reliable sources.
Random practice questions Useful after PYQs, but they should not be labelled as actual previous-year questions.
04 Tag every question

Unit-wise Paper 1 PYQ map

The official syllabus contains ten units and notes five questions carrying two marks each from every module. Tagging PYQs by unit helps you identify where marks are being lost.

05 Move from learning to exam simulation

The three-round PYQ method

1 Topic-wise learning round

Solve PYQs immediately after studying a topic. Use notes when required and focus on understanding the question style.

2 Unit-wise closed-book round

Complete a mixed set from the entire unit without notes. Record accuracy, time and repeated conceptual gaps.

3 Full Paper 1 timed round

Attempt 50 questions as one paper. Practise question selection, time control and switching between factual and calculation units.

06 Learn from every wrong answer

How to analyse Paper 1 PYQ mistakes

Concept error

You did not understand the underlying rule or definition.

Recall error

You had studied the fact but could not retrieve it accurately.

Calculation error

The method was correct, but arithmetic, units or interpretation failed.

Reading error

You missed words such as incorrect, not, most appropriate or only.

Record in your error register Example entry
Unit and topicResearch Aptitude — types of research
Why the answer was wrongConfused experimental and ex post facto research
Correct conceptWrite a two-line distinction
Next actionRevise the concept and solve five related questions
Reattempt dateAfter two or three study sessions
07 Know the limit of question practice

Why PYQs alone may not be enough

PYQs show how topics have been tested. They do not automatically teach every concept in the official syllabus or guarantee that the next paper will repeat the same wording.

When a candidate memorises answer options without understanding the concept, even a small change in language can make the question appear new.

The gap between seeing and learning PYQs diagnose the weak concept. Structured theory is what repairs it.

The most efficient approach is not theory without questions or questions without theory. It is concept learning followed by topic-wise PYQs, error correction and reattempt practice.

08 Where the SWMG Paper 1 course fits

Use a course when PYQs reveal repeated concept gaps

The SWMG UGC NET Paper 1 course is structured around all ten units and combines concept classes with topic-wise and unit-wise previous-year questions. It is suitable for beginners as well as repeat aspirants whose PYQ scores remain uneven across units.

Concept before answer Understand why the answer is correct instead of memorising an option.
Topic-wise PYQ discussion Connect previous questions with the exact syllabus concept.
Unit-wise practice Check whether learning survives when topics are mixed.
Tests and doubt support Convert repeated mistakes into questions that can be resolved.
A useful enrolment test

Before choosing any course, attempt a unit-wise PYQ set. If you can identify the correct answer but cannot explain the underlying concept, you need concept consolidation—not another answer-key PDF.

09 Avoid passive practice

Common mistakes while solving Paper 1 PYQs

Reading the answer before attempting Recognition creates false confidence and does not test recall.
Solving only favourite units The official syllabus distributes questions across all ten units.
Counting questions instead of corrections Improvement comes from errors repaired, not only PDFs completed.
Ignoring wrong options Understanding distractors helps with statement-based questions.
Using only old-pattern papers Prioritise questions aligned with the current syllabus and CBT format.
Never reattempting mistakes A corrected answer should be tested again after a gap.
Theory + PYQs + planned practice

Do not collect more questions until you know why the previous ones went wrong

SWMG’s Paper 1 Foundation Batch covers all ten units through basic-to-advanced concept classes, topic-wise and unit-wise PYQs, recorded learning, scheduled doubt support, weekly tests and study material according to the current course plan.

10 Final PYQ principle

Final advice

Previous-year questions are most valuable when they change what you study next. A low score in a PYQ set should lead to a specific unit, topic and concept—not to the vague conclusion that Paper 1 is difficult.

Your real PYQ score is not the number of questions you answered correctly once. It is the number of mistakes you can avoid when the same concept appears in a new form.
